How To Give Yourself The Best Chance of Preventing Identity Theft
Preventing identity theft is becoming of ever greater importance in our modern world. As the banking system comes to rely to an ever greater extent on computerized systems, so the risk of information falling into the wrong hands becomes ever greater. It is possible to reduce this risk considerably by following sensible guidelines, but it is never possible to eliminate it completely. One the data is on the systems of banks, credit card companies, or even government departments, you have no control over it.
One careless mistake by an employee of one of these organizations, and your data can be compromised and fall into the wrong hands. This is why it is a good idea to think about adding a layer of insurance to the partial protection you can put in place for yourself, and the protection offered by the law. The process of preventing identity theft, or at least reducing the chances to as low a percentage as possible, starts with looking at the way you store and dispose of sensitive information.
Do not make the mistake of carrying your PIN around with your cards. Every bank and credit card company specifically warns people against this, yet it is still done far too often. If you really do need to carry a reminder of your number, put it into some kind of personal code. It is also a good idea not to habitually carry your cards around when you are not intending to use them. Make sure you do carry the contact numbers you will need in the case of the cards being lost or stolen, and don't carry them with the cards.
To add an extra dimension to this protection, you can take out banking insurance which uses state of the art award winning software. If your cards are stolen, you will normally have to telephone each company in turn to put a block on the accounts. This all takes time, and this time is an asset to the thief. With the insurance based system, you make one telephone call to alert the system, and because the system has your account details, it can instantly send a message to all of your accounts freezing your money. This does not prevent identity theft, but it does make it much harder for the thief to profit from it.
How you dispose of sensitive papers can be critical, especially if you live in an upmarket area. Thieves will routinely sort through rubbish in trash cans looking for sensitive information. Shredders are so cheap to buy and easy to use that everyone should now be taking advantage of them. It is a good idea to get into a routine of shredding all paperwork, even that which just has your name and address. Sensitive information can be shredded in two separate piles, and the remains disposed of in different places. Disposing of sensitive information properly is the most crucial part of preventing identity theft.
