If you are going to be typing important information into a web form, the first precaution is to type the site's URL directly into the browser. This eliminates the possibility of you being sent to a spoof site through clicking a link. Secondly, be sure that the browser URL says “https” and not just “http”.

Online banking is now a necessary feature for banks to offer if they are to attract customers, but the system needs to be made as secure as possible. There has been an advance in this area which now helps people to identify a spoof site. Many of the world's biggest banks now operate a system where the user selects a combination of a picture and phrase, and that is displayed to them after they have logged in, but before they type in their password. This provides a welcome extra layer of online identity protection.
